To the right and the left of the interior tube are two different sized Helmholz resonators. The interior tube is exactly the same 2 1/4" diameter as the inlet collar. It just arrived today so I was able to take some detail pics.
Flowmaster vs magnaflow series#
I picked an all stainless steel series 50 delta flow 2/14 center in/ 2 1/4 offset out as it's one of the quietest Flowmasters. A Helmholz resonator is a dead ended chamber with a specifically sized opening and interior volume which reflects sound waves back at themselves so that they cancel each other out. It utilizes Helmholz resonators to cancel out unwanted sound frequencies. The Flowmaster design uses a completely different concept to eliminate unwanted sound frequencies. The core smoothly angles through from one end to the other. My Tacoma 2.7 is currently running one of their largest all stainless steel 22 inch long 5X11 oval, 2 1/4" center in, 2 1/4 offset out mufflers. As a constant diameter straight through muffler, it does not add any backpressure to the exhaust system. It uses surrounding sound deadening material to absorb the unwanted sound frequencies that pass through the smooth perforated core. Magnaflow uses a straight through perforated core design. These two mufflers express completely different design concepts. Up to recently I knew almost nothing about Flowmaster mufflers and so read about them and watched lots of youtubes. They both sound great with Magnaflows and the engines like them. With the money reclaimed from selling the old vehicles they replaced (a 1996 Toyota Tacoma and a 1993 Hyundai Excel), I got both the 2012's new for under $30K cash out the door. These are twin vehicles in that they are the cheapest truck Toyota sells and the cheapest car Toyota sells. I'm already a big Magnaflow fan and am running them on a 2012 Tacoma as well as a 2012 Yaris.
